What IELTS score does Thompson Rivers University require?

Students who miss direct entry are placed in TRU's English for Academic Purposes program: IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5 starts at Level 5 (two EAP and two academic courses), 5.5 with no band below 5.0 at Level 4, and 5.0 at Level 3. Duolingo 115, 100 and 90 map to the same levels; PTE is not applicable for EAP placement.

TRU says every sub-score must meet the level, and a good mark in one skill will not compensate for a poor mark in another. A test validity period, and a position on IELTS One Skill Retake or IELTS Online, are not stated by TRU.

For master's programs, an undergraduate degree from an English-language university in a country whose first official language is English also counts, as does TRU's ENGL 1100 or 1101 with CMNS 1290 or 1291 at a minimum B. For graduate programs and post-baccalaureate diplomas, TRU says a bachelor's degree from an English-medium university in the Philippines may exempt you from further testing.

TRU's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and CLB 7 too if you graduate from "any other university program", which must also be in an eligible field of study if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. The lower CLB 5 applies only to college, polytechnic and other non-university programs. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).
