Degree taught in English, and exemptions

A completed degree with English as the language of instruction is on the list of accepted proofs, which is the simplest route for most Indian, Pakistani and Nigerian graduates applying for a master's. TOEFL ITP, telc B2, UNIcert II and a completed degree in English or American Studies are also accepted.

The page says applicants from countries where English is an official, educational or native language need not submit English proof, but warns that different requirements apply to certain countries and extra proof may be asked for. Duolingo is not on the list.

German A1 for some English-taught programmes

For the master's in Advanced Manufacturing, Automation, Robotics and Control, Business and Economics, Design and Test for Integrated Circuits, Embedded Systems, Information and Communication Systems and Micro and Nano Systems, you must show German at A1 when you apply (Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD only) and A2 by the end of your third semester. Automotive Software Engineering, Web Engineering, Neurorobotics, Advanced Functional Materials and Advanced and Computational Mathematics build German into the course instead.

International applicants apply through uni-assist. The deadlines are 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your TU Chemnitz programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where TU Chemnitz publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
