UC Merced English requirements by level
Undergraduate figures are from the undergraduate English proficiency page; graduate figures are from the Graduate Division international applicants page.
| Programme | IELTS Academic | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 6.5 overall | TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL paper 550 (before Oct 2017) or 60 (revised), Duolingo 115 |
| Graduate (MS, MA, PhD) | 6.5 overall; reading 6, writing 5.5, listening 6, speaking 8 | TOEFL iBT 80 (R18, W19, L17, S26); Duolingo 120 (R100, W100, L110, S150) |
Other ways to meet the requirement
For graduate admission only, the requirement may be waived for an applicant who earned a basic degree from a US institution or from an institution in a country where English is the language of instruction. The graduate page says this waiver does not exempt you from the separate oral English test needed for a teaching assistant post.
First-year undergraduates with mixed records can use ACT English/Writing 24, SAT Writing scores, AP English 3 or above, or IB English results instead. Transfer students can use one UC-transferable English composition course with a grade of C or better.
The graduate requirements page says IELTS Indicator scores are not accepted, and the international page asks for an official IELTS Test Report Form by post rather than by email.

Graduate admission and how to check
Graduate applicants usually need a GPA of 3.0 (B). The international application fee is $155. The Graduate Division notes that some programmes ask for higher test scores than the minimums above.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UC Merced programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where University of California, Merced publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
