Validity, teaching assistants and the IELTS comparison

The undergraduate page says scores must be reported directly by Duolingo (select University of Illinois Chicago), can take up to two weeks to show as received, and are valid for two years from the test date, which must still be the case when you apply. The Graduate College says results cannot be more than two years old. Illinois state law requires UIC to confirm the English of all classroom instructors, so non-native-speaker teaching assistants must have their oral English assessed by the International Teaching Assistant Program Office before they can teach.

For comparison, the same pages set IELTS Academic at 6.5 with 6 in each band for undergraduates and 6.5 with 6.0 in each band for the Graduate College.

If your Duolingo score falls short

The undergraduate page says colleges may set higher minimums, but applications below the published minimums are not automatically denied. UIC's Tutorium in Intensive English offers an assessment that admissions accepts. Some graduate programmes consider lower scores with extra coursework, but the floors are set only for TOEFL, IELTS and PTE, not Duolingo. Some programmes may defer admission so you can take the Intensive English Program first.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UIC programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
