Graduate: IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in every section
UIC accepts TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic, Duolingo or its own English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA). On the old TOEFL scale the subscores are reading 19, listening 17, speaking 20 and writing 21. Many departments set higher minimums, while some will consider TOEFL 70, IELTS 5.5 or PTE 47 with supplemental coursework, or defer admission for the Intensive English Program. The MS in Computer Science lists the same minimums and also needs the GRE.
The test is not required after at least two academic years of full-time study, within five years of enrolment, in a country where English is the only official language and at a school teaching in English. UIC names no countries on this page and does not name India. The Biomedical Engineering page says Duolingo is accepted only from Fall 2027. See the Graduate Catalog.

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Undergraduate: IELTS 6.5, Duolingo from Fall 2027
First-year applicants need TOEFL 80 or 4.5, IELTS 6.5 with 6 in each section, PTE 54 with the same subscores as graduates, or Duolingo 120 with 115 in each, which is accepted only for Fall 2027 onward. UIC says English requirements are not waived based on the medium of instruction at a previous school, and scores below the minimums are not automatically denied. See international requirements.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UIC sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UIC Graduate Catalog graduate study page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
