Graduate: IELTS 6.5 or PTE 53

Applicants who must show proficiency submit Duolingo 110, IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 (0–120 scale) or 4.5 (1–6 scale), TOEFL Essentials 8.5 or PTE Academic 53. Each is valid for two years, and processing takes two to four weeks after your score request. If you do not meet the requirement, the Graduate School encourages you to apply to UL Lafayette's Intensive English Program. See graduate international applicants.

Only applicants with a bachelor's or graduate degree taught primarily in English at an accredited institution in a listed location are exempt. The list includes Australia, Canada, Gambia, Ghana, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, the UK and the US; India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Kenya are not on it. The Graduate School can still require proof from graduates of listed countries.

Undergraduate: IELTS 6.5, PTE 50 or Duolingo 100

First-year applicants need TOEFL iBT 79 (paper 550), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 100, PTE Academic 50, ACT English 18, SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing 500 or Accuplacer Writing 250. Citizens of listed English-official countries, or those who completed all high school coursework there, do not need a test. See undergraduate English proficiency.

The undergraduate list is shorter than the graduate one: it includes Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, Jamaica, Liberia, New Zealand, Sierra Leone and the UK, but not Nigeria or Ghana. See countries where English is the official language.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UL Lafayette sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UL Lafayette Graduate School international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
