Graduate admission and waivers

Minimums vary by department, but UMSL recommends graduate applicants have at least TOEFL 79 (4.5), IELTS Academic 6.5, C1 Advanced 180, PTE-A 59 or Duolingo 115. See graduate admissions.

A graduate waiver based on past study needs a degree from a US institution or an UMSL-recognised English-speaking country within the past two years; if your degree is older, you must have lived in an English-speaking country for at least two of the past three years. The recognised list includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Singapore and the Philippines, but not India or Pakistan. You are also exempt if you are in the US on a work visa such as H-1B or L-1, or completed ELS Level 112. See the English requirements policy.

Teaching assistantships and undergraduate admission

Graduate teaching assistantships go only to applicants who show sufficient oral English, and international students generally do not teach in their first semester. All instructors must meet Missouri's oral English standards and university policy.

Undergraduates need TOEFL 61 (4.0), IELTS Academic 5.5, C1 Advanced 160, PTE-A 44 or Duolingo 90. First-time college students can instead use ACT 24, SAT 1160, IB English HL 4, or GCSE or A-level English (not ESL) at grade C, and 24 semester credits at a US or recognised English-speaking college also count. See undergraduate admissions.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UMSL sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UMSL English language requirements page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Missouri–St. Louis publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
