Test rules and the IELTS comparison
The undergraduate page says English test scores are only valid for two years and are used in a holistic review. It does not mention PTE Academic Online, PTE Core or a PTE sending method.

If you fall short
Undergraduates can apply for conditional admission to improve their English at UNC Charlotte's English Language Training Institute (ELTI) before starting degree classes; completing ELTI Level 5 meets the requirement. Graduate applicants with only a PTE score would need TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo instead.
