What IELTS score do you need for the University of Essex?

Essex's postgraduate English requirements place each course in a numbered group. The MSc Data Science page asks for IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in all components, matching Group 1. These are four of the groups:

IELTS and PTE Academic are valid for three years and TOEFL for two; most other tests are accepted up to five years before the course starts. For October 2026 postgraduate entry that means IELTS and PTE taken in October 2023 or later. Essex can combine two tests of the same type if all scores are met across both. Duolingo does not appear in either Essex requirements document.

Essex's South Asia page says undergraduate applicants with 70% in English from CBSE or CISCE will not normally need a separate test. Its Africa page accepts C6 in WAEC or NECO English. The Pakistan page gives no school-English waiver, and says ISSC/HSSC applicants for undergraduate entry must pass a credibility interview. A route for Nepal is not stated by Essex.

For master's applicants, Essex may accept an undergraduate degree taught in English and delivered in person, normally completed no more than five years before the course starts. Degrees delivered remotely are not accepted.

Essex's pre-sessional courses are taught at the University of Essex International College, a Kaplan partner, on the Colchester campus. The 15-, 10- and 5-week courses give an uplift equivalent to IELTS 1.5, 1.0 and 0.5, and passing Kaplan's end-of-course test removes the English condition. A pre-sessional is normally valid only for a degree starting straight afterwards, and courses below degree level need an IELTS or Trinity test from an approved centre.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Essex programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
