Waivers and the German requirement on Advanced Materials

On Mind, Brain and Behavior, Sustainable Chemistry, the C1 programmes and Advanced Materials, you can skip a test with a higher education entrance qualification, or an English-taught bachelor's, from Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, the USA, the UK or South Africa. Economics of Global Risk accepts a bachelor's degree in English without naming countries.

Mind, Brain and Behavior and Human Movement Analytics also accept school reports showing at least six years of English up to the qualification that gives you university entrance. On both pages, level C1 is described as helpful and not mandatory.

Advanced Materials differs from the rest: its page is in German and says applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification must also meet the German-language proof it links to. Check that page before you rely on English alone.

How to apply

The English-taught pages split applicants into two cases. If you hold a bachelor's from a university outside Germany, Case B on the pages for Economics of Global Risk, Sustainable Chemistry, Human Movement Analytics and Mind, Brain and Behavior sends you through uni-assist. Mind, Brain and Behavior, Economics of Global Risk and Sustainable Chemistry start in the winter semester only.

For winter 2027/28, Mind, Brain and Behavior opens to applicants with an international bachelor's on 1 December 2026 and closes on 15 June 2027, deciding applications on a rolling basis. The Economics of Global Risk page says its dates will be published in spring 2027.

The Mind, Brain and Behavior and Economics of Global Risk pages charge no study fees, only a semester contribution of about 400 EUR. No pre-sessional English course is listed on these pages.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Giessen programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Justus Liebig University Giessen publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
