University of Lethbridge English test minimums

Scores are from uLethbridge's undergraduate ELP page and graduate ELP page, both for the 2026/2027 academic year, and the Faculty of Health Sciences spoken English requirement (SELP). Undergraduate and graduate test minimums are identical. TOEFL iBT, including the Home Edition, is 4.5 with 4.5 in each section, or 86 with 20 in each section for valid tests completed before 21 January 2026.

Both levels also accept CAEL or CAEL Online 70 with 60 in each component, and Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 176 with 176 in each subscore. The SELP applies on top of the general requirement and can also be met with six years of full-time study in English in a recognised country.

CBSE, CISCE and the exempt-university list

For undergraduates, uLethbridge lists India as a recognised country if you also present the CBSE All India Senior Secondary School Certificate with the Canadian equivalent of 75% in Core or Elective English or 80% in Functional English, or the CISCE Indian School Certificate with 75% in English. You then need at least three consecutive years of full-time secondary study in English.

Graduate applicants can use a bachelor's or master's degree from a recognised institution taught in English. The exempt-university list names the Indian Institutes of Technology (all campuses), the Indian Institute of Science, IIM Bangalore, Anna University and Jadavpur University among others, and other institutions are considered case by case. The graduate page groups this route under evidence "within two years of applying", so confirm how that applies to an older degree.

Validity and deadlines

Tests must have been completed within two years before your application date, and scores must be valid and verifiable. Undergraduates must meet the requirement by 1 August for September or 15 November for January; conditionally admitted graduate students by 1 August, 15 November or 15 April. Conditional graduate admission requires a program committee recommendation and places you in the Advanced Level of EAP.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules

uLethbridge's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and CLB 7 too if you graduate from "any other university program", which must also be in an eligible field of study if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. The lower CLB 5 applies only to college, polytechnic and other non-university programs. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).
