Sending scores, TA rules and the IELTS comparison

The Graduate School's test scores page says it accepts score reports sent directly from the testing agency, and that international applicants must meet the TA minimums to be considered for a Teaching Assistant position. The Graduate School FAQ adds that some departments have their own English requirements, so check with the graduate coordinator.

For undergraduates, the admissions page waives the test for native speakers, students educated in English in listed countries, students with two or more years of non-ESL study in the US or Canada, an SAT Reading/Writing score of 550 or more, or an ACT English score of 24 or more.

Compared with IELTS: undergraduates need IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 110, and graduate applicants IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 115, rising to IELTS 7 or Duolingo 130 for a TA post.

If you fall short

The pages read do not describe a conditional or pathway admission based on a lower Duolingo score. The graduate FAQ says no English test is needed if your previous degree was taught in English or English is an official language of your home country.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UMaine programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
