Test rules and the IELTS comparison

The Graduate College's FAQ says TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores are valid for two years after the test date. A degree from a US institution, or from an institution in a country where English is an official language, leads to a waiver once a transcript is submitted with the application.

For undergraduates, the admissions page says the official test must be sent to the Office of Admissions directly from the testing agency, and scores sent by the student are not accepted. If you think you qualify for a waiver, email admissions@uvm.edu.

Compared with IELTS: the Graduate College asks for IELTS 6.5 for admission and 7.0 for Graduate Teaching Assistant funding, the same two steps as Duolingo 110 and 120. The undergraduate page pairs Duolingo 110 with IELTS 6.5.

If you fall short

The Graduate College page states that applicants who do not meet the English minimums are not eligible for direct entry admission. The pages read do not describe a conditional or pathway route, so plan to retake the test before the deadline if you are below 110, or below 120 if you need TA funding.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UVM programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
