UMHB graduate English minimums
From UMHB's English proficiency requirements page for admission to graduate and ESOL programmes. It sets the minimum scores to enter academic classes bearing credit toward graduation. It states the IELTS minimum per band, not as an overall score.
| Test | Minimum to enter graduate classes |
|---|---|
| IELTS | At least 6 in each band |
| TOEFL iBT | At least 80, with at least 20 in each band |
What happens below the minimum
Graduate international students must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score as part of their application. Students whose scores do not meet the minimum are evaluated on arrival, and those below the graduate minimum enter the ESOL programme.
On arrival the student takes a 3-part English placement test: listening and reading comprehension, then a writing sample graded by UMHB faculty on grammar, coherence and skilled use of written English. Students then enrol in a combination of ESOL and academic courses. ESOL courses are Grammar, Reading, Writing and Oral Communication, at basic, intermediate and advanced levels, each worth 3 credit hours, at 50% of undergraduate tuition.

Waivers and how to check
The page says that if an international student attended an English-speaking college or preparatory school before admission, the ESOL requirements may be waived, and asks you to contact the chair of the modern foreign languages department about waivers. To progress out of ESOL a student must meet every exit requirement listed on the ESOL website.
The page does not list PTE Academic or Duolingo. This guide covers graduate study only, so read your own programme page for any extra rules.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UMHB programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
