Test conditions and sending your PTE score

The page says every approved test must be completed in one sitting, within 24 months of your planned start, with the score on a single test report. Tests must be taken at a test centre, and the University does not accept online or at-home versions of any approved test, so PTE Academic Online is out. The test must also be taken in your country of citizenship, last country of education, or current country of residence or employment, with a bordering-country exception where the test is not offered.

There is no Pearson code on the page. You either ask your test centre to send results to the University or upload them in the application portal with your verification details, which the University checks with the test provider.

For comparison, Level 1 equals IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in every band, Level 2 equals IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in every band, and Level 3 equals IELTS 7.5 with 7.0 in every band.

If your PTE falls short

Melbourne endorses Hawthorn-Melbourne as the sole external provider of the University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP) and UMELBP Prep, which give a direct pathway into many undergraduate and graduate coursework courses. Packaged offers combine a 10 or 20-week Hawthorn-Melbourne English course with your degree on one visa; the page sets those entry points in IELTS terms only (5.5 with no band below 5.0, or 6.0 with no band below 5.5). Undergraduates can also use a foundation programme such as Trinity College Foundation Studies.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Melbourne programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
