Admission with English courses: Transition and Bridge
Ole Miss accepts a wide list of tests, including Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 169 with no part below 162, Michigan English Test 55, Trinity ISE 90, IB English and GCSE/IGCSE English. Scores must come directly from the testing agency and be less than two years old. See English proficiency requirements.
If you meet the academic standard for an undergraduate or graduate degree, IELTS 5.5 puts you on the Transition Pathway: 3 hours of IE 090 and 1 hour of IE 091 alongside degree courses in your first semester, needing a C or higher in both. IELTS 5.0 puts you on the Bridge Pathway: three Intensive English courses (9 credit hours) in your first semester, needing a B to move up. IELTS 4.5 and below points to the Intensive English Program. Undergraduates below the Transition scores can request conditional admission in writing from International Student and Scholar Services.

You are exempt with a higher-education degree earned while living in a listed country, after two years at and graduation from an accredited US high school, as a transfer with 30 US credits including two English writing courses, or after the Advanced Plus Level of the Ole Miss Intensive English Program with a B. The graduate list is longer, adding countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, but neither list includes India or Pakistan. See the exempt countries.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Mississippi sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Ole Miss English proficiency requirements page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
