Waivers reviewed case by case

The page says applicants meeting one of these conditions are reviewed case by case for a waiver of the test: two non-ESL English courses at a US high school with at least a B; secondary school completed in an English-speaking country after at least two years of continuous enrolment; an IB Diploma with at least 5, or at least 6 in standard-level English; British O-level English at B or higher; A-level English at C or higher; 24 credit hours of non-ESL study at a US two- or four-year institution with at least a 2.0 GPA; or at least one year of non-ESL post-secondary study in an English-speaking country with at least a 2.0 GPA.

What the ESL route means

Students who score between 3.5 and 4 on the TOEFL, 46 to 54 on PTE Academic, 5.5 to 6.0 on IELTS or 85 to 99 on Duolingo can be admitted, but must enrol in at least 8 credits of ESL coursework within their first year. Ask admissions how those credits fit in your course before you accept.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Mount Union programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Mount Union publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
