Validity, ESL 887 and the IELTS comparison

Graduate Studies says TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores are valid for two years. Your letter of admission says whether you must take ESL 887, a three-credit writing course that can count towards your plan of study. For Duolingo the trigger is a writing score below 145 for tests from 1 July 2024 onwards, or production and literacy scores below 130 for tests before that date. The page does not mention teaching assistantships.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 with a 6.0 subscore for general admission, and Graduate Studies asks for IELTS 6.5 overall.

If your Duolingo score falls short

Undergraduates who do not meet the English requirement are enrolled in the Nebraska Intensive English Program and conditionally admitted to the university. The chance to move to full admission is reviewed at the end of each semester. Graduate Studies points students who need more support to the same Intensive English Program but sets no Duolingo entry level for it.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Nebraska programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
