What IELTS score do you need for the University of Oklahoma?

You must meet the composite and every subscore in a single test instance: MyBestTOEFL scores and IELTS One Skill Retake scores are not accepted. IELTS Online and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition are accepted; TOEFL Essentials is not. The Duolingo English Test is accepted from the Summer 2026 semester as a pilot, at 130 overall with 115 in reading, listening, speaking and writing. Accounting, Biomedical Engineering, Business Administration, Engineering Physics, Management Information Technology, Political Science, Public Administration and TESOL require higher scores than the minimum. Citizens educated in OU's exempted English-speaking countries, such as the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (except Quebec), Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Singapore, need no test, nor do holders of a bachelor's degree from the US or those countries. OU states that not every country with English as an official language is exempt, and India is not on the list.

The Graduate English Pathway (GEP) admits applicants with IELTS 5.5–6.0, TOEFL 61–78 (or 4.0 with Reading and Listening 4.0 and Speaking and Writing 3.5), PTE 50–59 or Duolingo 110–125 on a conditional basis. You need a recommendation from a participating program, such as Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Data Science Analytics or Petroleum Engineering. You study 12 hours a week at OU's Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) for one or two semesters while taking up to six credit hours. The CESL fee is $3,200 per semester, and GEP runs in Fall and Spring only.

Undergraduates need IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 4.0 (79 before 21 January 2026), Duolingo 100 or PTE 53, and OU considers consistency across subsections. Other routes include US high school, 24 semester hours or a bachelor's degree from a country where English is the native language, or completing CESL.
