UO's accepted tests are the TOEFL iBT (Home Edition included), IELTS (IELTS Online included) and the Duolingo English Test; TOEFL code 4846. A bachelor's or higher from Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the US may satisfy the requirement. India is not on the list, and UO does not accept English-medium-of-instruction certificates in place of approved proficiency documentation. Undergraduates with IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 4.5 (80 before January 2026) or Duolingo 110 get full admission; lower scores lead to admission with academic English support or conditional admission through UO Global Welcome, with full admission after its highest level. Citizens of listed countries, such as Australia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and the UK, need no test; India is not on the list. See English proficiency.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Oregon sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UO graduate international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
