Graduate: IELTS 6.5 in every band
For TOEFL taken before 21 January 2026 you need 80 overall with Reading 19, Writing 18, Listening 17 and Speaking 18; after that date, 4 overall and 4 in each section. IELTS needs 6.5 overall and 6.5 in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Duolingo needs 115 (120 for a teaching assistantship), PTE needs Reading 53, Writing 59, Listening 47 and Speaking 47, and CEFR B2 is also listed; URI asks you to check alternatives with your department. See international applicants.
No test is needed for citizens of Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, the US, an Anglophone African country or an English-speaking Caribbean country, for degrees earned in those countries, or for degrees from four named universities in Lebanon, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. India and Pakistan are not covered. URI also says it does not consider three-year bachelor's degrees from India and certain other countries equal to a four-year US bachelor's, though a three-year degree may qualify under listed conditions.

Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement URI sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the URI Graduate School international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
