UDC IELTS levels

From UDC's English proficiency page. The page does not list separate graduate IELTS or TOEFL minimums.

ProgrammeIELTSOther tests
Flagship (undergraduate and graduate)6 overallTOEFL iBT 79 (written 550), ELS 112
Community College6 overallTOEFL iBT 79; 60-78 with ESL Accuplacer average 86; ELS 109

TOEFL rules and other routes

Applicants with less than 60 on the TOEFL internet test are denied admission to the Community College. Those scoring 60 to 78 are admitted to the Community College if they also average 86 or better on the ESL Accuplacer exam.

A transcript showing a C or better in one college-level English course at an accredited US post-secondary institution also meets the requirement. PTE and Duolingo are not mentioned on the page.

How to check

The SAT/ACT requirement can be waived with two college-level English courses at an accredited American institution with a C or better. The page does not state score validity.

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UDC sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture, see IELTS for the USA.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UDC programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
