Graduate: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 for assistantships
Graduate applicants whose native language is not English submit TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or the Duolingo English Test; PTE is not on the graduate list. The minimums are TOEFL 80 on the 0–120 scale or 4.5 on the 1–6 scale, IELTS 6.5 and Duolingo 110. Graduate assistants need TOEFL 90, and applicants who miss that may be asked for a Test of Spoken English score. IELTS and Duolingo scores can go to the Office of Graduate Admission through the testing service, by mail or to gradadmission@pacific.edu. The graduate page lists no waiver; if you fall short, Pacific points to English Language Pathway programs through UOP International. See international graduate applicants.

Undergraduate: waivers and conditional admission
Undergraduates who need a test can use TOEFL 80 or 4.5, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 110 or PTE 53. You need no test if you completed secondary or post-secondary education where English is the primary language of instruction (with an official letter from the institution), completed high school in the US, scored SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 570 or ACT 22, are a citizen of Australia, Canada, Ghana, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa or the UK, or have a B in A-Level English, AP English 4 or IB English 5. See English language proficiency. Pacific also offers conditional admission for students who need ESL first, through UOP International. See the international students FAQ.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of the Pacific sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Pacific international graduate applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of the Pacific publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
