UVic English test minimums

Undergraduate scores are from UVic's English language requirement page; graduate scores are from the Graduate admissions language proficiency page, which notes that individual departments may set a higher standard. Graduate TOEFL is 4.5 with no section below 4.0 for tests after 21 January 2026, or 90 with no section below 20 before it, and UVic accepts the iBT Home Edition and TOEFL MyBest scores.

Both levels also take CAEL 70 with no section below 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 180 with no skill below 170, and the Michigan English Test 64 (4-skill only for undergraduates, no section below 60 for graduates). Graduate Studies accepts six tests, CAEL, Cambridge, IELTS, MET, PTE and TOEFL, so Duolingo is not an option for a master's or PhD.

One Skill Retake, online tests and validity

Both levels list IELTS Academic including results from IELTS One Skill Retake. Undergraduate Admissions accepts the online tests offered by CAEL, IELTS and TOEFL; Graduate Studies accepts Academic IELTS, not General Training, taken at a test centre or online. Scores must reach UVic directly from the testing organisation, and unofficial scores are refused.

Undergraduate tests taken more than two years before your application to UVic are not accepted, and graduate scores more than two years old are not accepted either.

Waivers and conditional admission

Undergraduates can meet the requirement through study, for example four years of full-time English-medium study in Canada or a recognised English-speaking country, three years at a recognised secondary school taught in English with at least a B in grade 11 English, or a recognised degree taught in English in a recognised English-speaking country. Conditional admission is open to Business, Engineering and Computer Science, Fine Arts, Humanities, Science, Social Sciences and some arts programs; you then meet the requirement by the date in your offer email.

Graduate applicants are exempt if English is their primary language, if they hold a degree from a designated English-speaking country, a list that does not include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal or Sri Lanka, or if they hold a degree from a recognised institution where the language of instruction is English. Graduate applicants without proof may be considered if their academic unit agrees, and must then pass UVic's University Admission Preparation course with at least 80%.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules

UVic's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and CLB 7 too if you graduate from "any other university program", which must also be in an eligible field of study if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. The lower CLB 5 applies only to college, polytechnic and other non-university programs. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).
