What IELTS score do you need for the University of West London?

UWL may exempt you from a test if, within the last five years, you gained GCSE or IGCSE English at C/4, IB English at HL 4 or SL 5, a high school diploma with 70% in English or an undergraduate degree from an institution in a UKVI majority English-speaking country, or a UK university foundation programme.

The India page adds a school-mark route: HSCE (Standard 12) with 70% or above in English for undergraduate entry and 75% or above in English for postgraduate entry. Academically, UWL looks for Standard 12 averages from 65% (depending on board) for a bachelor's and an Indian bachelor's degree above 55% for a master's. PhD applicants still need an English test.

If your score is below direct entry, UWL may invite you to its online pre-sessional English. For 2026 the 15-week course (4 May to 14 August, £5,125) takes undergraduate offer holders from IELTS 4.5 and postgraduates from IELTS 5.0 with 4.5 in each skill; the 10-week course (£3,550) takes 5.0 and 5.5; and the 6-week course (£2,125) takes 5.5 and 6.0. On the pre-sessional page, PTE 51+ maps to IELTS 6.0 and 46–51 to 5.5. UWL issues the CAS only after you pass the course and meet every other offer condition.

You can receive a conditional offer without a test, but you cannot enrol, or request a CAS, until the English condition is met.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UWL programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
