What IELTS score do you need for West Virginia University?

If you are a citizen of a qualifying country, or for graduate admission hold a bachelor's degree from one, you do not need to submit scores. The list names India, Pakistan and Nepal alongside Australia, Canada, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, the UK and others. Undergraduates can also qualify with an IB Diploma, a GCSE or GCE English grade of A to C (4 to 9), 24 or more transferable credits at a university where English was the sole medium of instruction, shown by a certificate, or a bachelor's degree from a qualifying country. Graduate programs may set higher scores, so check with your program contact. If WVU can verify your reported scores you will not need to send official results. For a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, the speaking section counts: IELTS speaking 7.5 or TOEFL speaking 22 (4.5 after January 2026). Exempt applicants are considered eligible, while PTE and Duolingo takers, and those below the speaking bar, must pass an interview with a WVU administrator.

WVU offers Intensive English Program (IEP) conditional admission for many applicants, though not all graduate programs take part and online programs cannot. You stay in the IEP until you submit an approved score, then join classes the next available term. Undergraduates on the Morgantown campus can also enter the English Language Pathways Program for one or two semesters, mixing English and general education courses.
