I’d like to talk about a pub quiz night that I took part in about six months ago. It happened on a chilly Thursday evening at a traditional neighbourhood pub just around the corner from my flat. A few of my former university mates and I try to catch up regularly, and on this particular occasion, someone suggested forming a team for their weekly trivia contest to do something a bit different.

There were four of us in total, which worked out brilliantly because we all have completely different backgrounds and interests. One friend is a massive film buff, another works in finance, so she is exceptional with numbers and logic, and I suppose my strength was general geography and pop culture. Having such a diverse squad definitely helped us tackle the broad mix of rounds.

The quiz itself was divided into several distinct sections, spanning everything from 80s rock music and history to cryptic picture rounds and obscure science trivia. Some of the questions were absolute brain-teasers, and we ended up having some hilarious debates over our final answers before scribbling them down. To be honest, we were neck and neck with another table for most of the evening, which made it surprisingly thrilling.

What made the whole night so memorable wasn't just the excitement of competing, although we did actually manage to scrape second place by a single point. It was really about the relaxed atmosphere and the chance to properly unwind after a hectic week. There was no real pressure to win, so we spent most of the time laughing at our wildly incorrect guesses, making it a genuinely lovely way to reconnect.

Jot down the venue, timing, and teammate roles (e.g. film expert, numbers).

Speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
