Games: questions and Band 8 answers

The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 10 questions about games in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

Sample answers

What games are popular in your country?

Football is undoubtedly the most widespread sport across the UK, capturing the attention of millions every weekend. Beyond physical sports, board games like Scrabble or Monopoly remain traditional staples in many households during the festive season or rainy afternoons.

What benefits do people get from playing games?

Games are fantastic for cognitive development and keeping the mind sharp, especially with strategy-based activities. Furthermore, they provide a vital social outlet, allowing people to bond with friends and family while taking a necessary break from the stresses of daily life.

Do you play any games?

I’m quite fond of playing chess online in my spare time. It’s a brilliant way to challenge my tactical thinking, and I find the digital interface makes it easy to find opponents from all corners of the globe at any hour.

Do you think modern lifestyles encourage, or discourage, adults from playing games?

I believe current lifestyles often discourage play because people are increasingly consumed by professional obligations and constant digital connectivity. The pressure to remain productive means that many adults view gaming as a frivolous waste of time rather than a healthy, balanced pursuit.

How do people learn to play games in your country?

Children usually pick up the rules of traditional games from their parents or at school during physical education classes. For more complex tabletop or digital games, most people rely on online video tutorials or simply learn by trial and error with their peers.

What do you think about people spending too much time on computer games?

Excessive screen time is certainly concerning when it starts to negatively impact a person's physical health or interpersonal relationships. While gaming can be an immersive hobby, it’s essential to maintain a healthy equilibrium between virtual worlds and real-world responsibilities.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
