Maps: questions and Band 8 answers

The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 8 questions about maps in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

Do you often use maps?

Actually, I rely on them almost daily. As I live in a bustling city with a complex public transport system, I frequently check digital maps to calculate the quickest routes to work or find new local cafes.

How often do you use maps on your phone?

I use them multiple times a day without fail. Whether I am driving to a client meeting or simply trying to navigate my way through unfamiliar neighbourhoods, the GPS feature is an indispensable tool for my productivity.

Do you use paper maps?

Rarely, if I am being honest. While I appreciate the aesthetic appeal of a physical atlas, I find them quite impractical compared to the live traffic updates and interactive zoom functions available on my smartphone.

Do you have maps at home?

Yes, I keep a large, vintage-style wall map in my study. It serves more as a decorative piece than a functional navigational aid, but I enjoy pinning the different countries I have visited over the years.

Do you think it's better to use a paper map or a map on your phone?

Digital versions are clearly superior for day-to-day travel. They offer real-time data, such as road closures or public transport delays, which a static paper map simply cannot provide, making modern navigation far more efficient.

When was the last time you needed to use a map?

Just yesterday, I used one to find a hidden bookstore in a part of the city I had never visited before. The street layout was quite confusing, so the step-by-step guidance was incredibly helpful for locating the entrance.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.

Useful vocabulary

Bustling: A place that is full of busy activity and people.
Indispensable: Something so important that you cannot manage without it.
Aesthetic appeal: The quality of being visually pleasing or beautiful.
Navigational aid: A tool used to help someone find their way around.
Static: Something that does not change or move over time.
Street layout: The way in which roads are arranged in a city.

Use varied vocabulary to describe your digital habits rather than repeating the word map constantly.
Give a direct answer first, then provide a brief personal reason or example to support it.
