Politeness: questions and Band 8 answers

The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 8 questions about politeness in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

Who taught you to be polite?

My parents were the primary influence on my manners while I was growing up. They were sticklers for etiquette, constantly reminding me to say please and thank you. I remember my mother specifically insisting that I write handwritten thank-you notes after every birthday party I attended.

Are you a polite person?

I try my best to be considerate of others in my daily interactions. I make a conscious effort to acknowledge service staff and listen actively when people are speaking. It is fundamentally important to me that I treat everyone I encounter with the same level of respect.

Is it important to be polite?

Yes, it is absolutely essential for maintaining social harmony. When people interact with courtesy, it reduces friction and creates a much more pleasant environment for everyone. Simple acts of politeness act as a social lubricant that helps disparate individuals work and live together without unnecessary conflict.

What do you do if others are not polite to you?

Well, I generally choose to remain calm rather than retaliating in kind. I find that mirroring their rudeness only escalates the situation, so I usually just disengage or respond with neutral professionalism. Keeping my composure allows me to maintain my personal standards regardless of how others behave.

According to you, are you a polite person?

I certainly believe so, as I place a high value on social decorum. I am always mindful of my tone and body language, especially in public spaces or professional settings. I find that being courteous is a reliable way to build positive rapport with new acquaintances.

Do you think people should be polite? Why is being polite important?

People definitely should be polite because it builds mutual trust within a community. It serves as a sign of empathy, showing that you value the other person's feelings and time. Without this basic level of consideration, society would become far more aggressive and difficult to navigate effectively.
