Band 8 sample answer

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households with Internet access in urban/suburban and rural areas of a European country between 1999 and 2004. Overall, it is clear that Internet penetration grew steadily in both regions throughout the period, although urban and suburban areas consistently remained ahead of rural locations in terms of connectivity.

In 1999, only 15% of urban/suburban households had Internet access, compared to a negligible 2% in rural areas. By 2001, the urban/suburban figure had climbed to 40%, while rural access reached 10%. This upward trend continued for both groups; by 2002, half of all urban/suburban households were connected, whereas rural access stood at 15%.

By the end of the period in 2004, the gap between the two regions remained significant. Urban/suburban access reached a peak of 55%, representing a substantial increase from the initial 15% in 1999. Meanwhile, rural access experienced its most rapid growth between 2002 and 2004, rising from 15% to 35%. Despite this late surge in rural connectivity, urban/suburban households remained the dominant group with Internet access throughout the entire six-year timeframe.

How long should an IELTS Task 1 answer be?

How do I describe bar charts?

Compare the biggest and smallest bars before anything else. If the bars show years, describe change; if they show places, describe rank. Round sensibly and say 'just over' or 'nearly' rather than guessing decimals.
