Percentage of students passing high school competency exams by subject and gender

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of male and female students who successfully passed high school competency exams across seven different subjects during the 2010-2011 academic period.

Overall, girls generally achieved higher pass rates than boys in the majority of subjects, with the most significant disparity observed in chemistry. Conversely, geography was the only subject where boys outperformed their female counterparts. Computer science recorded the highest overall pass rates for both genders, whereas history and geography generally saw the lowest figures.

Regarding the sciences, girls dominated in computer science with a pass rate of 56.3%, compared to 42.1% for boys. In chemistry, the gap was even more pronounced, as 30.2% of girls passed, which was more than double the 14.1% recorded for boys. Physics also showed a female lead, with 36.7% of girls passing against 34.6% of boys. In contrast, geography saw boys achieve a higher pass rate of 30.4%, while only 20.1% of girls were successful.

In the remaining subjects, performance was relatively balanced. Mathematics and foreign languages showed very similar results for both genders, with girls slightly ahead at 49.2% and 47.4% respectively, compared to 48.4% and 46.8% for boys. History pass rates were lower overall, with 25.6% of girls and 22.9% of boys passing.
