Rhino Poaching Statistics in South African Provinces from 2010 to 2012

Overall, it is evident that Kruger National Park was the primary target for poachers, significantly outstripping all other locations in every year surveyed. While poaching numbers peaked in 2011 for several areas, there was a general downward trend by 2012.

Kruger National Park recorded 145 incidents in 2010, which surged to a peak of 252 in 2011 before dropping to 127 in 2012. In contrast, other regions reported much lower figures. Limpopo experienced a notable rise from 52 cases in 2010 to 74 in 2011, followed by a decline to 29 in 2012. Similarly, North West saw its highest poaching count in 2010 with 57 incidents, which subsequently fell to 21 and 19 in the following two years.

Kwa-Zulu Natal maintained relatively consistent levels, starting at 38 in 2010, dipping slightly to 34 in 2011, and reaching 22 by 2012. Other locations, such as Gauteng, Mapumalanga, and the Eastern Cape, showed minor fluctuations, generally remaining below 30 incidents annually. Northern Cape and Western Cape reported negligible or zero poaching activity throughout the three-year period.
