The Industrial Process for Extracting Essential Oils for Perfume Production
The diagram below shows how oil is expected in use of production of perfume.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
- 1.Heating water to create steam
- 2.Passing steam through aromatic plants
- 3.Creating a mixture of steam and oil vapor
- 4.Condensing the vapor using cold water
- 5.Separating the essential oil from the hydrolat

Band 8 sample answer
The provided diagram illustrates the industrial distillation process used to extract essential oils for perfume production. Overall, the procedure involves a series of interconnected stages, beginning with the generation of steam and concluding with the separation of the final aromatic products.
In the initial phase, water in a boiler is heated by a fire, producing steam. This steam is directed into a secondary chamber containing aromatic plants. As the steam passes through the plant material, it absorbs the volatile compounds, resulting in a mixture of steam and oil vapor. This gaseous mixture then travels through a condenser, which is cooled by an external supply of cold water. As the vapor cools, it transitions back into a liquid state, releasing hot water as a byproduct.
The resulting liquid, which consists of a mixture of water and essential oil, is then transferred into a separator. Within this vessel, the two substances are divided based on their properties. The essential oil, being distinct, is collected at the top, while the remaining liquid, known as hydrolat or aromatic water, is discharged from the system. This systematic approach ensures the efficient isolation of fragrant oils from raw botanical sources.

How to write about process diagrams
- Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends.
- Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally.
- Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.

Frequently asked questions
What should the overview say?
The process is a multi-stage distillation system that transforms raw plant material and water into separated essential oil and aromatic hydrolat through heating, vaporisation, and condensation.
How long should an IELTS Task 1 answer be?
At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.
How do I describe process diagrams?
Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally. Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
