    Mixed signals

    the two halves must agree

'If' plus a past tense says the idea is imaginary. Then 'will' says it is real. The halves of an if sentence must agree.

If I livedimagined by the sea, I will swimreal every day.

Pearson Essay grammar, top mark: “errors are rare”.

    How real is the idea?

    ask in this order

    1. 1A fact, or a real possibility?
      • fact: if + present, presentzero
      • real: if + present, willfirst
      ↓ no: imagined or missed
    2. 2Imagined now, or too late?
      • now: if + past, wouldsecond
      • past: had pp, would have ppthird

In a real if-clause, use the present, not 'will'. Polite 'if you will wait' is one exception.

    Four patterns and a shortcut

the tense pair carries the meaning

    PatternExample
Zero: if + present, presentIf you heat ice, it melts.
First: if + present, will + verbIf fares fall, more people will ride.
Second: if + past, would + verbIf I were mayor, I would ban vans.
Third: if + had + pp, would have + ppIf she had asked, she would have known.
Unless: ≈ if ... notUnless fares fall, few will ride.

If-clause first: comma. Second: usually none.
