IELTS Listening band 8.5: audit the last few lost marks and fix each type

Near the top of the Listening scale, you understand almost everything and still lose a few marks. Doing more practice tests does not move them, because they are rarely comprehension errors. They are format and attention slips, and each type has its own fix once you can see it.

So the honest answer: ielts.org does not publish a figure for 8.5. Band 8 sits at an average of about 35 correct, so band 8.5 needs more than that, and the exact cut-off moves a little between test versions. In practice you are working with a handful of lost marks out of 40, and every one of them matters.

Is 8.5 in IELTS Listening good? It sits between band 8, which ielts.org describes as "Very good", and band 9, "Expert". ielts.org's general description of band 8 mentions "only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies" (IELTS scoring in detail). That phrase is the clue to this whole sheet.

Here is the BandLadder view. Once you score in the mid-30s, few of your wrong answers are things you did not understand. Most are a missing plural, a misspelt word, an answer over the word limit, a forgotten second answer, or a question that passed while you were still writing the last one. These slips feel random, but each learner repeats the same two or three types.
