PTE essay Development, Structure and Coherence: one argument, start to finish

Most advice treats this trait as layout: four paragraphs and a few linking words. The trait is scored out of 6, and the top band asks for more than layout. It wants one argument that a reader can follow from your first line to your last.

What is Development, Structure and Coherence in the PTE essay?

Development, Structure and Coherence (DSC) is one of the traits Pearson scores in Write Essay. It is scored 0–6, the same maximum as Content and General Linguistic Range; Form, Grammar, Vocabulary Range and Spelling are scored out of 2. Write Essay feeds your Writing score, and DSC is one of the traits a human expert also reviews (Score Guide, pp. 15, 34–39).

Read the descriptors from 6 down to 3 and you will see the trait is made of three strands. The rest of this sheet takes them one at a time.

The three strands of DSC

StrandWhat a 6 rewardsWhat pulls it down to 3–4
Argument line (development)One clear position, developed step by step at lengthA position that is present but thinly developed or hard to follow
StructureIntroduction, conclusion and paragraphs in a logical orderParagraph breaks that are not always effective; parts missing
Coherence (links)Varied links that state how ideas relateLinks that only add the next point, one after another

Paraphrased from the PTE Academic Score Guide (July 2025), pp. 35–36.

This sheet sticks to DSC, not word counts or word choice. For how every writing trait fits together, read PTE Writing 79; for word choice inside the sentence, see General Linguistic Range.

FAQ

What is Development, Structure and Coherence in PTE?+

It is a Write Essay trait that judges whether your argument is clear and developed, your paragraphs are logically ordered, and your links show how ideas relate (PTE Academic Score Guide, July 2025, pp. 35–37).

How many marks is Development, Structure and Coherence worth?+

It is scored from 0 to 6 in the July 2025 Score Guide (p. 35), the same maximum as Content and General Linguistic Range. A human expert reviews it as well as the AI (p. 15).

How many paragraphs should a PTE essay have?+

Pearson's preparation article suggests four: an introduction, two body paragraphs that each develop one idea, and a short conclusion. The descriptors care more that each paragraph is clear and in a logical order.

Do linking words improve the PTE essay score?+

Only when they state a relationship such as cause, contrast or consequence. A chain of Firstly, Secondly and Moreover links ideas in a line, which the guide describes at the lower bands.

Can I use a template for the PTE essay?+

Use a plan of moves, not memorised sentences. Pearson treats pre-prepared or memorised material as irrelevant, and an irrelevant response can score zero for Content, which cancels the other traits (Score Guide, p. 8).

What is the difference between coherence and cohesion?+

Coherence is whether the ideas make sense in their order; cohesion is the language that ties them together, such as linkers and words that refer back. DSC rewards both.
