ANU PTE minimums by programme
ANU's English language requirements page lists PTE Academic as an accepted test and points to the English language admission policy, which holds the scores. Table 2 of the policy covers undergraduate programmes and Table 6 postgraduate coursework.
| Programme or band | PTE overall | Minimum per skill |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, study starting before 1 Jan 2027 | 64 | 55 in reading, writing, listening and speaking |
| Undergraduate, study starting on or after 1 Jan 2027 | 64 | 60 in each skill |
| Postgraduate coursework (unspecified programmes), before 2027 | 64 | 55 in each skill |
| Postgraduate coursework (unspecified programmes), from 2027 | 64 | 60 in each skill |
| Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) | 70 | 60 in each skill |
| Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Professional Psychology | 70 | 65 in each skill |
Test rules, combining sittings and the IELTS level
The policy accepts PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI but excludes PTE Academic Online, and says results from at-home or remote versions of tests are not accepted. PTE Academic UKVI is not accepted for the MChD or the two psychology masters. The test must be taken within two years of the date of application, or four years if you have since completed a year of full-time education in English within the last two years.
Results from different tests cannot be combined unless the policy says so. For the two psychology masters, the 65 in each skill can be met across two sittings in six months if you score 75 overall in both and nothing below 58 in either. The policy gives a TOEFL institution code (0506) but no PTE code, so follow the instructions in your application.
ANU's policy does not list PTE Core. Pearson's PTE Core FAQ says PTE Core is initially only suitable for work and migration visa routes to Canada and that PTE Academic is the test accepted for university study. For comparison, the same policy sets IELTS Academic at 6.5 with 6.0 in each band for undergraduate and unspecified postgraduate programmes, 7.0 with 6.0 in each for the MChD, and 7.0 with 7.0 in each for the psychology masters.

If your PTE score falls short
ANU recognises very few English programmes in place of a test. The policy lists the AEMG Direct Entry Program (EAP 2 or EAP 3) at 70% with no section below 65%, but only for students admitted through named university-to-university articulation agreements, and says other programmes or pathways are not accepted. It also lists recognised university foundation programmes for undergraduate entry. From 1 January 2027 admitted students sit a post-entry language assessment that does not affect the admission decision.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your ANU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
