What IELTS score do you need for Cal State East Bay?

Cal State East Bay accepts TOEFL iBT (Home Edition included), IELTS Academic, Duolingo, PTE Academic and the Michigan English Test, plus a DAAD certificate with a C in every section. IELTS General Training, IELTS One Skill Retake, TOEFL Essentials and TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted. Second-bachelor's applicants must meet the graduate minimums. Some departments set earlier deadlines or extra requirements; check your program.

The test is waived with a bachelor's or master's from a US institutionally accredited college, or for applicants educated in a listed country such as Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ghana, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa or the UK. India is not on the list. See the graduate requirements.

Undergraduates need IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 3.5 (61 before 21 January 2026), Duolingo 95, PTE 44 or MET 51. Other routes include CBSE Year 12 English with grade A2 (84), SAT 550 Verbal, ACT English 22, AP English 3 or IB English A (6 Standard Level, 5 Higher Level). First-years with three years at a US high school are waived. See English proficiency requirements.

Academically qualified undergraduates who have not met the English requirement can receive conditional admission and attend the Global Academy Intensive English Program until they meet it. Conditional admission for graduate applicants is not stated by Cal State East Bay. See the freshman requirements.

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Cal State East Bay sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Cal State East Bay English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
