Deakin PTE scores by English level

From Deakin's English language requirements page, which gives one equivalence table for associate degree, undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate research degrees. Each course page states its IELTS level; read across to the PTE score here. Deakin calls the table a general guide and notes that some courses have higher requirements.

Test rules and how PTE compares with IELTS at Deakin

The page lists Pearson Test of English (Academic) among nine accepted tests. You must complete the test no more than two years before starting your course at Deakin, unless otherwise specified. If your course leads to professional accreditation, Deakin asks you to check that your test and results also meet the professional body's rules, which may differ.

The page does not mention PTE Academic Online, combining scores from different sittings, or a Pearson institution code. Deakin's page does not list PTE Core. Pearson's PTE Core FAQ says PTE Core is initially only suitable for work and migration visa routes to Canada and that PTE Academic is the test accepted for university study.

Because Deakin sets its levels in IELTS terms, the PTE figure is always read off the same table: for example, a course at IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 needs PTE 60 with no band below 52.

If your PTE score falls short

The same page lists Deakin University English Language Institute English for Academic Purposes results as equivalents: EAP Level 2 at 60% for the IELTS 5.5 level, Level 3 at 60% for 6.0, Level 4 at 60% for 6.5 (6.0), Level 4 at 70% for 7.0 (6.5) and Level 4 at 75% for 7.0 (7.0). Deakin says these program equivalents do not apply to postgraduate courses. A Deakin College foundation program or diploma is another route for undergraduate courses only.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Deakin programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
