Douglas English test minimums
Scores are from Douglas College's international students admission requirements page. TOEFL iBT (in person or online) is 4.5 with no section below 4.0 from January 2026, and 83 before that, with Writing 21 for post-degree and post-baccalaureate programs. A band minimum for undergraduate programs is not stated by Douglas, only the 6.5 overall.
Other options: TOEFL Essentials 9 (no section below 8), CAEL 60 overall and essay, CLB 8 in each skill, Cambridge CAE 75 or CPE 60, and EIKEN Grade 1. The general English proficiency page notes that some limited-enrolment programs set a different requirement.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diplomas, associate and bachelor's degrees | 6.5 overall | 83 or 4.5 (no section below 4.0) | 56 | 110 |
| Post-degree and post-baccalaureate programs | 6.5, no band below 6.0 | 83 (Writing 21) or 4.5 (none below 4.0) | 56 | 110 |
One Skill Retake, IELTS General and validity
Douglas says IELTS Academic with One Skill Retake will be considered for admission, and that IELTS General Training is not accepted. Official test scores are valid for two years from the date the test was written, and Duolingo results must be sent directly to Douglas.
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a seat; Douglas says many programs are competitive and some specialized programs have higher requirements.

Below the minimum, you can apply to Douglas's English Language Learning and Acquisition (ELLA) program, which takes IELTS 4.5 with no band below 4.5, or finish a partner pathway such as ILAC University Pathway 3.3 or Global Village Level 7. A bachelor's degree from an English-speaking institution also meets the requirement.
Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
Douglas College's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program, so a bachelor's degree earned at a college still needs CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP).
