IELTS fees in the UAE by provider
Both IELTS providers run tests across the UAE and, for the main test, charge the same. Figures come from IDP UAE's fee table and its live Dubai sessions, and from the British Council's booking page and dates and fees page. Neither shows tax as a separate line, so the price listed is the price you pay.
IELTS in the UAE is taken on computer at a test centre. The paper option left is Writing on Paper, where you do Listening and Reading on screen and write by hand; the British Council says it is not available for UKVI tests, and that candidates with special requirements should take the paper-based test. Neither provider's UAE fee table lists IELTS Online (the at-home test).
| Test | IDP | British Council |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General Training on computer | AED 1,590 | AED 1,590 |
| IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper | AED 1,750 | Offered; no separate price listed |
| IELTS Premium (on computer, hotel venue in Dubai) | Not offered | AED 2,000 |
| IELTS for UKVI on computer (Academic or General Training) | AED 1,680 | AED 1,680 |
| IELTS for UKVI Life Skills (A1, B1) | AED 810 | AED 810 |
| One Skill Retake (standard IELTS) | AED 1,000 (AED 1,100 with Writing on Paper) | AED 1,000.70 |
| One Skill Retake (IELTS for UKVI) | AED 1,060 | AED 1,058.40 |
A British Council booking includes free access to IELTS Ready Premium (40 practice tests and lessons) and five extra Test Report Forms sent free to the institutions you apply to. Its Premium option adds a dedicated relationship manager, a same-day Speaking test, buffet lunch and refreshments at a hotel venue in Business Bay, Dubai.
Check the Premium price at booking: the fee tables show AED 2,000, while the Premium page itself says AED 1,910 for IELTS on Computer. The test, the scoring and the Test Report Form are the same as standard IELTS on computer, so Premium buys comfort and service, not a different result.

IDP UAE's rules for standard IELTS are on its reschedule and cancel page: a transfer is free 15 or more days before your Listening, Reading and Writing date, costs up to 25% of the fee within 5 to 14 days, and is not allowed within 4 days. Cancel 15 or more days ahead and you get 75% back; within 14 days the fee is not refunded. IDP notes these rules exclude IELTS for UKVI.
IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills follow the IELTS partners' UKVI policy: 75% back more than 14 days before, 50% within 14 days but more than two days before, 25% within two days, and nothing on or after test day. IDP refunds a One Skill Retake in full if you cancel 72 hours or more before the session, with no administration fee, and nothing if you do not turn up. If a serious medical condition stops you sitting the main test, IDP says you can send a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date for a refund minus the local administrative cost. Special consideration for illness or bereavement can be requested before the test or up to two calendar days after it.
| When you ask | IELTS (IDP rules) | IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills (UKVI policy) |

How to book and pay, and how to spend less
To book with the British Council you need a valid passport or Emirates ID; you enter the details when registering and show the same document on test day, and without it you cannot sit the test or claim a refund or transfer. You pay online in dirhams, but the British Council warns that some banks treat the payment as international and add a foreign transaction fee. Candidates under 18 need written consent from a parent or guardian.
Three ways to save: choose Writing on Computer at IDP (AED 160 less than Writing on Paper); use One Skill Retake (about AED 1,000) instead of a full new test if one skill let you down, within 60 days (One Skill Retake guide); and book IELTS for UKVI only if your UK course or visa asks for it (IELTS for UKVI vs Academic). PTE Academic costs AED 1,520 in the UAE (PTE fee in the UAE).
Before you spend AED 1,590, take a free full IELTS mock test scored by BandLadder AI and check your likely band with the band score calculator.
