Tasmania's English rules and priority points
On the Tasmanian Skilled Employment (TSE), Skilled Graduate (TSG) and Established Resident (TER) pathway pages, ROIs are ranked on priority attributes grouped as Gold, Green, Orange Plus and Orange. One Orange attribute reads: you have Proficient / Superior English, or you have an exemption to the English language requirements based on your passport country. It is worth 1 point. For comparison, the TSE Gold attribute is worth 1,000 points.
The required documents include an English test result dated within the last three years, unless you hold a passport from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States. Tasmania also warns that English tests and skills assessments must be current at the time of nomination, or Home Affairs may refuse the visa.
| Pathway | English minimum | English priority attribute |
|---|---|---|
| 190 and 491 TSE (skilled employment in Tasmania) | Visa minimum (Competent) | 1 point for Proficient/Superior or passport exemption |
| 190 and 491 TSG (Tasmanian graduates) | Visa minimum (Competent) | 1 point |
| 190 and 491 TER (established residents) | Visa minimum (Competent) | 1 point |
Competent, Proficient and Superior English in IELTS and PTE
Home Affairs sets each level per skill, not as one overall score, and a state can only use these levels. Sources: Competent, Proficient and Superior English pages. On the 190 and 491 points tests Competent earns 0 points, Proficient 10 and Superior 20. A citizen holding a valid passport from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States meets Competent English without a test, but needs a test score to claim Proficient or Superior.
In Tasmania a higher English score matters more for your Home Affairs points (10 or 20) than for the state ROI score. Tasmanian nomination adds 5 points for the 190 (points table) or 15 for the 491 (points table).
