Is IELTS or PTE easier?

Neither test maker says its test is easier, and visa authorities set equivalent scores for both. The differences are format and logistics. PTE Academic is a two-hour computer test scored by AI with some human review, with results typically in two days, at ₹18,900 in India. IELTS takes 2 hours 45 minutes, uses human examiners, returns computer results in 1 to 5 days and costs ₹19,000.

Human examiners vs AI scoring

In IELTS, people score the productive skills. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, and certificated examiners mark both writing tasks against task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1.

In PTE Academic, every response gets an AI score. Since August 2025, content in seven question types is also checked by a human, with a second human settling any disagreement, but pronunciation and fluency are scored by the machine only (Pearson). Neither approach is officially easier; they reward different habits. PTE rewards speaking steadily into a microphone within tight timers, while IELTS rewards developing ideas in conversation with a person.

Accepted for UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand visas

United Kingdom: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1, A2 and B1, taken in person at an IELTS for UKVI centre (ielts.org); or PTE Academic UKVI for work visas and below-degree study, and PTE Home for family, settlement and citizenship (Pearson). Scores compared: PTE vs IELTS for a UK visa.

Australia and New Zealand: Pearson says PTE Academic is accepted for visa and migration applications in both countries, and ielts.org names both as migration destinations for IELTS. For Australian points, see PTE vs IELTS for Australia PR and the IELTS for 189, 190 and 491 visas guide.

Canada: for economic immigration the PTE option is PTE Core, not PTE Academic (Pearson), and the IELTS option is General Training. CLB scores compared: IELTS General vs PTE Core and IELTS for Express Entry.

Fees in India

Pearson's price finder for India showed ₹18,900 for PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core across 57 centres on 4 October 2026, and ₹15,300 for PTE Home. IDP India lists ₹19,000 for IELTS Academic or General Training, on computer or Writing on Paper, ₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI, ₹18,000 for Life Skills and ₹12,650 for One Skill Retake. The gap between the main tests is ₹100. Neither page says whether tax is included.

Which suits whom

Pick by acceptance first, then by how you perform. IELTS fits you if you would rather speak to a person than a microphone, want your writing judged by human examiners, or may need to resit a single skill: IELTS offers One Skill Retake, while Pearson's retake policy only covers the whole test. PTE fits you if you want one sitting of about two hours, results in about two days, and are comfortable answering short timed tasks on a computer.

For Canada PR, the choice is between IELTS General Training and PTE Core. The cheapest way to find out which format suits you is to sit a scored mock of each before paying about ₹19,000 for the real test.
