What PTE score do you need for MIT?

MIT's undergraduate admissions office accepts PTE Academic with a minimum score of 65 and a recommended score of 70. Scores are self-reported on the application and verified on enrolment, and MIT considers your highest section scores across sittings. MIT's graduate admissions list of recommended English test scores does not include PTE Academic, so graduate applicants should plan on another test.

Test rules and how to report your score

MIT strongly recommends an English proficiency exam for non-native speakers who have used English for fewer than five years or do not speak it at home or in school. You self-report every sitting on the application and MIT verifies scores on enrolment, so official score sending is not needed to apply. If you sit the same test more than once, MIT primarily considers the highest score in each section. The page does not mention PTE Academic Online, PTE Core or a validity period.

On the same page, IELTS has a minimum of 7 and a recommended 7.5, so PTE 65 to 70 sits alongside IELTS 7 to 7.5 in MIT's own table. Graduate admissions recommend IELTS Academic 7, TOEFL iBT 100 (or 5 on the new scale), DET 135 for some departments and Cambridge 190, per the graduate page.

If you fall short

MIT does not publish a conditional admission or English pathway route on these pages. A PTE score between 65 and 70 meets the minimum but sits below the recommended level, so a retake before the deadline can help. Regular Action applicants can still add English test results from the January test dates.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your MIT programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
