MTSU English requirements at a glance
Sources: the Office of International Affairs pages for graduate and undergraduate applicants. Scores must be sent by the testing agency, are valid for two years, and TOEFL must be an ETS official score to code 1466. MTSU's pages give TOEFL on the new 1–6 scale only.

Graduate admission: IELTS 6
Only F-1 students must submit English proficiency, unless their program says otherwise. The options are TOEFL iBT 4.5, IELTS 6, ELS Level 112, Duolingo 95 or PTE 70. Required scores vary by department. The PTE bar is high relative to IELTS 6, so compare the two before you choose a test. See graduate admission.
No test is needed if English is the official language of your country of citizenship, or if you hold a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited US four-year college or university. MTSU does not publish a country list, so ask the College of Graduate Studies whether your citizenship qualifies.

Undergraduate admission
The general undergraduate minimums are IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 4, Duolingo 85, iTEP 3.5, PTE 59 or ELS Level 110. Professional Pilot and Nursing need IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 4.5, Duolingo 95, iTEP 3.8, PTE 70 or ELS Level 112. You are exempt if English is the official language of your country of citizenship, if you graduated from a US high school or a school abroad taught mainly in English (not in all cases), with SAT Critical Reading 510 or ACT Composite 22, or after ENGL 1010 and 1020, a year of English courses with B or higher, or an associate degree at a US college. See undergraduate admission.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement MTSU sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the MTSU graduate admission page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Middle Tennessee State University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
