PTE Academic is 55, Duolingo 115 with no subscore below 95, and TOEFL iBT 4 (or 80 for tests before 21 January 2026). The test date must be less than two years before you submit your NSCC application.

NSCC English test minimums

Scores are from NSCC's admission requirements page. One set of minimums applies across programs. Results count as official only if the testing company sends them to NSCC Admissions directly; the TOEFL code is 8686. Other options are CLB 8 in each skill (placement tests not accepted), CAEL band 60, Michigan English Test 59 and CanTest 4.5.

NSCC sets no single overall IELTS band, so a 6.5 overall with a 5.5 in one skill does not meet the rule. A position on IELTS One Skill Retake is not stated by NSCC.

Exemptions for international applicants

You may be exempt after Grade 12 at an English Canadian high school, NSCC's English for Academic Purposes program, an approved EAL program at a partner school, a year of full-time study at an English Canadian college or university, or three years of full-time English-medium study at a college or university in a country where NSCC does not require testing. NSCC's document and language requirements by country answer "Yes" to required language testing for India.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules

NSCC's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program, so a bachelor's degree earned at a college still needs CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP). NSCC's own PGWP guide also names CLB 5 in each skill for college-program graduates, with results no more than two years old.
