Royal Roads English test minimums
Scores are from RRU's English language requirements page. The higher graduate requirement applies to the Master of Arts in Professional Communication, the Doctor of Social Science and the Doctor of Business Administration programs, and RRU does not accept Duolingo for those three. Some programs may require additional proof of English competence.

One Skill Retake, online tests and validity
RRU accepts IELTS Academic taken at a test centre or online, and IELTS Academic One Skill Retake. It accepts TOEFL iBT, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and TOEFL MyBest Scores. Results are valid for two years from the date of your exam and count as official when sent directly by the testing organisation; other tests are considered case by case.

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Credential waiver and pathways
The test is normally waived if you graduated from a recognised diploma or degree program at a college or university where English was the primary language of instruction in an English-speaking country on RRU's list. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are not on that list, and RRU can still ask for a test at any point. The third route is a pathway program with one of RRU's language school partners.
Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
Royal Roads's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and CLB 7 too if you graduate from "any other university program", which must also be in an eligible field of study if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. The lower CLB 5 applies only to college, polytechnic and other non-university programs. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).
