University English requirements

What IELTS score does Saskatchewan Polytechnic require?

Saskatchewan Polytechnic asks most applicants for IELTS Academic 6.5 with at least 5.0 in each component, PTE Academic 63 with components of 50, or Duolingo 110. Several health programs set far higher bars, such as IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in every band. Tests are valid for two years and must be valid on the day you apply, and India's CBSE and CISCE curricula are generally accepted instead of a test.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic English test minimums

Scores are from Sask Polytech's English language proficiency requirements page, where programs without their own rule follow the general list. TOEFL iBT is 81 with 19 in each skill, including the Home Edition, or 4 with 4 in each skill for tests from 21 January 2026. Sask Polytech calls Duolingo 110 the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 "for most programs".

Other options: CAEL CE or Online 60 with 50 in each component, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at grade C1, LanguageCert Academic 65 with no skill below 45, and Oxford ELLT 7 with no skill below 4. Pharmacy Technician applicants can use the national pharmacy regulator's language rules, and the nurse practitioner and BSc Nursing programs point to partner rules.

Validity, retakes and curricula that count

Tests are valid for two years and must be valid on the date your application reaches Sask Polytech. Its meeting English requirements page says applicants who miss an IELTS minimum must re-write all four segments, and segment scores cannot be combined; IELTS One Skill Retake is not mentioned by name.

Applicants who studied an English curriculum in a listed country are generally treated as meeting the requirement; for India only the CISCE and CBSE curricula are listed. You also qualify with 24 credits from a recognised English-speaking post-secondary institution. Practical Nursing treats no country as exempt.

English programs that lead to a conditional offer

Proof of registration in an approved English program, with a date by which you will meet the requirement, can bring a conditional offer. Approved routes include The Language Gallery Canada Level 6, the University of Regina's EAP 100 and 101, 70% in English School of Canada's UCTP (80% for post-graduation certificate programs) and ILAC's University Pathway at 3.2.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules

Saskatchewan Polytechnic's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks graduates of college, polytechnic and other non-university programs for CLB 5 in all four skills, and anyone who graduated with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree for CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP).
