St. Lawrence English test minimums
Scores are from SLC's proof of English proficiency page. PTE Academic is accepted online and in person. CAEL (in person or online) is 60 at both levels, Oxford ELLT 6 or 7, and the Michigan English Test 58 or 62. CELPIP is not accepted. SLC lists Duolingo as temporarily accepted, with results sent directly through the Duolingo portal.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas | 6.0, no band less than 5.5 | 78 or 4 | 55 | 110, no sub-score below 85 |
| Fast-track, graduate certificates, degrees | 6.5, no band less than 6.0 | 83 or 4.5 | 60 | 120, no sub-score below 95 |
Tests applicants from India cannot use
Against Duolingo, SLC writes that "International applicants from India are not eligible to submit Duolingo results". The same exclusion is noted for EIKEN, the Michigan English Test and Cambridge English. Indian applicants can still use IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE Academic, CAEL or Oxford ELLT. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are not named in these notes.

Tests must have been completed within the last two years. A position on IELTS One Skill Retake and on IELTS Online is not stated by SLC.
Two years of full-time, in-person study in a listed English-language country also counts; India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are not on the list. SLC also accepts completion at partner schools such as ILAC (University Pathway 3.2 or 3.3), ILSC and Oxford International Digital Institute.
Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
St. Lawrence's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program, so a bachelor's degree earned at a college still needs CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP).
